Several of our mobile users have lost data when their notebooks' hard disks died and a few have accidentally deleted files for which they had no backups. Do you know of any storage or backup devices that work well in the field?

We suggest the USB removable drives as the storage media for all those who use notebook computer.

 

What are the supported operating systems?

Supported Operating Systems of BackTrak are Windows 95/ 98/ 2000 Professional/ XP Home/ XP Professional/ ME.

How is my data secured?

BackTrak provides security by encrypting the data and by providing passwords to the data, where only the owner of the data can retrieve it.

 

How to un-install BackTrak?

You can un-install BackTrak from the Add/Remove Program option in your control panel, select BackTrak from the list and un-install

 

What should be the speed frequency between the CD writer and the CD?

The Speed frequency of the CD should be equal or less than the speed of the CD writers. (For example; A CD writer with 10x speed capacity can write to the CD supporting either 10x or less than 10x.)

 

Can I give UNC path as a Backup location?

BackTrak supports the UNC (Universal Naming Convention) methodology for specifying the backup location. To perform this you should have rights to access a particular system. Specify the server name or system name, the drive name and the folder name in the backup location field. For example, \\ABC001\C\TestBackup.

 

Can I execute backup from Network drives?

Yes. BackTrak allows you to backup data from both the local and mapped network drives.

 

How to identify a modified file status during trickle backup process?

The modified files are logged into the BackTrak queue and will be residing in the Queue till the file has to be backed up.

 

If an external drive; For example, a zip drive, is reused to backup data that already has old backups, will it replace the files?

BackTrak will not replace the old backups. The succeeding backup versions for the changed files will be added to the existing backups and the retention option controls only the succeeding versions of the files not the original version of the file.

 

If I save multiple revisions, should I have enough space on the disk for several FULL copies?

While backing up, the file is automatically compressed and on average the file size is compressed to about 1/3rd of the original file. However, the number versions to be maintained depend on the retention option you choose. You should have enough space to take the backup of version files also. If there is no enough space, BackTrak will prompt a message and guides you to take necessary steps.

 

How do I know there is enough free space on disk to backup?

If the required space is not available in the disk, then BackTrak prompts the warning message.

 

Some file extensions are not seen in "Include Files by File extensions" option of BackTrak.How to add/register new file extension?

If the file extensions are not registered, it will not be listed in the Include/exclude options. You have to include the file extensions manually to be listed in the application.

To add a new file extensions

  • Open Windows explorer
  • On the Tools menu, click Folder Options
  • Select Files type tab, the available registered file extensions will be listed
  • Click New button to add a new file extensions
  • Type the required extensions; for example, "doc"
  • In the "Create New Extension " dialog box, click "Advanced" button to associate the application with the extension.
  • In the "Associated File Type" select any one application from the pull-down list to associate it with the extension.
  • Click OK button and close the window.
  • Start the BackTrak application again to view the newly added extension in the Include/Exclude Files by File extensions
 

Does BackTrak span CD disks during the backup operation?

Yes, the backup will prompt the user automatically to insert a new CD once the first disk reaches its maximum capacity.

 
Profile
 

Is it necessary to select a profile for the backup process?

If you are executing backup process from the windows explorer, it is enough to right click and select "Backup to BackTrak Primary Profile" to execute the process. If you want to execute the backup through the application or in the background then you need to create a profile.

Can I edit my profile settings?

Yes. You can edit the profile settings as required. After editing the profile, all the relevant processes of BackTrak will be handled accordingly to these new settings, if edited and saved.

Would I be able to delete a profile with BackTrak?

No. BackTrak will not provide the support of deleting the created profiles through the BackTrak application.

What is Backup Log ?

Backup log is a log file that provides you the information of the backup processes like the backup type, profile name, last run date, number of files and skipped files.

 

What permissions does a user need to perform a backup?

Administrator rights are mandatory to read the files and to get the backup for those files

How do I schedule a backup?

Backup can be scheduled by setting different schedule options through the profile manager. According to the different schedule options, the profile will be executed to get the backup.

 

How do I back up the registry?

Select the Registry settings and invoke the backup process. Three different registry files are created in the backup location.

 

How long does the backup take?

It is very easy to take backup of your data using BackTrak. For instance, it would just take 15 minutes to backup of 1 GB data.

 

How many backups do you retain?

BackTrak supports a maximum of 99 versions for a single file.

 

What tasks do I have to do every day to run a backup?

How much compression can I expect from my data?

BackTrak supports 1/3 of compression by default.

 

How does the automatic backup scheduler work?

Automatic backup scheduler is a background process, which takes backup in predefined schedule as instructed, based on the profiles. Here daily, weekly, monthly and yearly backup are supported.

 

Does BT handles IE Favorites and Outlook email?

Yes. BackTrak supports the backup of IE Favorites and Outlook settings.

 

What storage device backups you support?

BackTrak supports the removable devices like, Zip drive, Jaz drive,CD-RW, USB drive and Mapped Network drives. You can backup your data from any remote location to a local location or vice versa.

 

How can I take backup of files/folders from windows explorer?

You can select the files and folders to be backup, and right click the mouse button and select "Backup to BackTrak" option from the drop down menu. These files and folders are affected with the primary profile settings.

 

How do I disable a scheduled backup?

You can open the corresponding profile and disable the scheduled backup option.

 

Does BackTrak perform incremental operations?

With BackTrak you can perform the incremental operations. After performing full backup of the required files and if the corresponding files are subjected to change, then incremental backup is performed for those changed files.

 

What is Retention Option?

The retention option allows you to maintain the number of versions of the changed file(s) and helps you to keep the recent changed file based on the selected retention option.

 

How do I Backup data to a fixed drive (Network Drive/Partition/USB Fixed Drive) using Scheduling options such as daily/Weekly/Monthly?

If you want to backup data to a fixed drive/Network Drive/ Partition/USB drive, you need to set the profile with the following options: -

Step 1- Select the required files and folders to be backed up from the Files and Settings tab.

Step 2- Select the backup destination location (Fixed Drive/Network Drive/USB drive...) in the Backup options tab.

Step 3- To schedule the task, check the" Schedule At" option of the Execute and Retention tab.

Step 4- Set the Effective start date and time of the schedule, which will consider the profile from the specified date for scheduling.

If you want to choose Daily schedule option, set the profile as: -

(Repeat the Steps from 1 to 4 and then execute Step 5)

Step 5- Select Daily option and set the recurrence pattern as "1" it will execute the backup process daily at the specified time.

(Note: Retention Option can also be set to retain the number of versions or to retain the number of days or only original version of files.) By default the retention options retains last 7 versions of file.

If you want to choose Weekly schedule option, set the profile as: - (Repeat the Steps from 1 to 4 and then execute Step 5)

Step 5- Select Weekly option and set the recurrence pattern as "1" it will execute the backup process every week at the specified time.

Step 6 - Retention option can be set to retain the number of versions or Monthly versions for prior 3 months. By default the retention options retains last 7 versions of file.

 

How do I backup data to a removable disk using Daily/Weekly/Monthly scheduling options and how to retain the latest version by rotating the disk?

If you want backup data to Removable disk, set the profile in Backup option tab: -

Step 1 - Select the required files and folders to be backed up from the Files and Settings tab. If you want backup data to removable disk, set the profile in Backup option tab as: -

Step 2 - Select the backup destination location (Jaz,USB,Zip )in the Backup options tab.

Step 3 - To schedule the task, check the "Schedule At" option in the Execute and Retention tab.

Step 4 - Set the Effective Start date and time of the schedule, which will consider the profile from the specified date for scheduling.

If you want to Choose daily schedule option, set the profile as: -

(Repeat the Steps from 1 to 4 and then execute Step 5)

Step 5 - Select Daily option and set the recurrence pattern as "1" it will execute the backup process daily at the specified time.

Step 6 - Retention option can be set to retain the number of versions or to retain the number of days or only original version of files.

If you want to rotate the disk daily and retain the latest version, set the profile as:-

(Repeat the Steps from 1 to 4 and then execute Step 5)

Step 5- Select Daily option and if the recurrence pattern is set as "1 " it will execute the backup process daily at the specified time to retain the backup of latest changed files.

Step 6 - Set the retention option as Retain Last 1 versions.

Note: - Rotating the disk has to be done manually and this setting will force the system to backup all the files to be backed up onto every removable disk you insert in the first day. But after that, it will only backup the changed files onto the removable disk along with the original set of files. Since only the last one version is to be retained, it will remove the prior backed up version.

If you want to choose Weekly Schedule option, set the profile as: -

(Repeat the Steps from 1 to 4 and then execute Step 5)

Step 5- Select the Weekly option and set recurrence pattern as "1", which will execute the backup process every week at the specified time.

Step 6 - Retention option can be set to retain the number of versions or weekly versions for prior 4 weeks.

If you want to select Monthly Schedule option, set the profile as: -

(Repeat the Steps from 1 to 4 and then execute Step 5)

Step 5 - Select the Monthly option and set the recurrence pattern as "1", which will execute the backup process every month at the specified time.

Step 6 - Retention Option can be set to retain the Number of versions or Monthly versions for prior 3 months.

Does BackTrak support disk spanning?

Yes,BackTrak supports disk spanning.

 

Does BackTrak support HP-DVD+RW using HP-DLA, UDF or Adaptec protocols?

BackTrak supports HP-RW provided the CD is formatted using Direct CD format. You will see this utility in CD burner software like Adaptec and Roxio. First format the CD using this utility and then use BackTrak to take backup.

 

Does BackTrak allow to backup on multiple CDRW CD's?

BackTrak does not support backup on multiple cdrw cd's. However we suggest you to create new profiles,which is of your CD Capacity (say 700 MB) before taking backup.

 

Does BackTrak backup to CD-RW?

Yes, you can backup data to CD-R and CD-RW in case you install 3rd party programs like Adaptec Direct CD, CeQuadrat PacketCD or InstantWrite. The CD-RW drivers must be installed in your system and the drives must exist like the hard drives for example," E:\ or F:\.

What is Restore log?

Restore log is a log file, which provides you information of the restore processes like number of files restored, restore location, date and time.

 

I just want to view the contents of a backup archive. I don't want to restore anything right now. Can I do this?

Yes. You can view the contents of a backup archive through the BackTrak application. With the help of Rev. Restore button one can review the backup data with the maximum available versions of that source file, modified date and time and size of the files.

 

How do I restore a backup?

Files can be restored either through the BackTrak application or directly by double clicking the " .btb " files (backup files). Rev/Restore option allows you to view the files and folders that have been backed up. These files and folders are displayed with the same hierarchy structure, as they are available in the source. You can select either one or more files and folders that you want to restore.

 

What are the options available for restoring a file?

There are two options available namely By Date and By File/Folder to restore a file. You can select Rev. Restore option from the toolbar or from the Actions menu. By Date option allows you to restore files till the date specified in the calendar to the location specified or original location. By File/Folder allow you to restore the latest file to the location specified or original location.
